Let’s Slice the Ice

A Collection of Black Children’s Ring Games and Chants by Eleanor Fulton and Pat Smith.

A unique collection of old and new ring games and chants, “Let’s Slice the Ice” allow a valuable Black folk tradition to live and breathe again in the lives of today’s children, who cannot know the experience of those early evenings on rural dirt roads of the South long ago. Anyone who is able to shake their hips, rhyme their words and keep up with the tempo can participate in these ring games and chants. Kids from Maine to Oregon can experience the rhythmic, cool fun of “Slice the ice, slice the ice, hey everybody do your thing.” Both children and adults will learn how to feel the flow of their bodies, their imaginations, and the rhythms of their minds.
