Inspired by the body percussion pieces in Rhythmische Übung, by Gunild Keetman, particularly #33 and #34 for patting and clapping, Roger Sams has written a BP/UTP Lesson Part 2. In Part 1, Roger models a kinesthetically-based process for teaching the piece through movement and active listening. In Part 2 you will see how to transfer the BP to hand drums and rhythm sticks, creating a nice contrast of timbres when performed in canon. He also models the process for notating the rhythm of this piece with your students. They have learned the piece through rote, body-based process. Now they can demonstrate their understanding through notation and the building of literacy skills. (In the film, Roger says incorrect numbers.)
This lesson will take a couple of classes to get through. We think your students are going to enjoy this one. Have some fun!

LOVE IT! Can’t wait to try it out with my students.
Thanks, Roger!!! I can’t wait to do this with my kids!
I just tried part 1 with my second graders this morning. We have never done anything quite like this before. We read rhythms but haven’t used a variety of movements for different notes and they haven’t read notes on any kind of “staff”. It went very well and we even tried 2 part and for it being their first time they did pretty well! I’m looking to trying this with the rest of my 2nd grade classes and seeing how part 2 of the lesson builds on part 1.
Thank you for the great ideas on those ‘free lessons’. The body percussion lesson was very timely for the end of the school year.
I love the lessons you send us.
Thank you for the free lessons!
